I recently completed the Booklist Challenge on Faceboook which used the BBCs Booklist Challenge as it’s basis. It transpired that I had read 63 of the 100 books suggested by the list. All well and good – I’m clearly a reader. But what of the list?
Anglocentric describes it best. I’m not saying the original booklist was bad. It contained many choices which were, and remain, excellent. What rankled was that by ignoring many other fine writers in English, though not specifically English or North American themselves, the original booklist actually did a dis-service to Literature.
